Europe's LUMI-AI Supercomputer Enters Service for AI Workloads
EuroHPC JU has officially launched LUMI-AI in Kajaani, Finland, Europe's first flagship supercomputer purpose-built for AI training and inference. The AMD MI300X-powered system anchors a continent-wide push for sovereign AI computing infrastructure.
On August 29, 2026, the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) announced that the LUMI-AI supercomputer has officially entered into service. Located in Kajaani, Finland, LUMI-AI is Europe's first flagship-class supercomputer purpose-built for artificial intelligence workloads, marking a pivotal milestone in the continent's drive to establish sovereign AI computing infrastructure.
The system is hosted by CSC — IT Center for Science, Finland's national research and IT infrastructure provider, which has operated the LUMI data center since its inception. CSC will manage LUMI-AI alongside the existing LUMI system, leveraging its extensive experience in large-scale HPC operations.
Hardware Architecture: Built for AI
LUMI-AI is equipped with AMD Instinct MI300X GPU accelerators, a platform specifically optimized for large-scale AI training and inference workloads. The MI300X, based on AMD's CDNA 3 architecture, features 192 GB of HBM3 memory with high bandwidth, enabling efficient processing of large language models and other memory-intensive AI applications. This represents a significant architectural shift from the original LUMI system, which utilized AMD Instinct MI250X accelerators geared toward traditional HPC workloads.
The choice of MI300X accelerators positions LUMI-AI to handle the full spectrum of AI computing tasks — from training foundation models with tens of billions of parameters to serving real-time inference requests — while maintaining compatibility with open-source AI frameworks through AMD's ROCm software stack.
Part of Europe's AI Flagship Program
LUMI-AI is a cornerstone of the EuroHPC JU's AI flagship initiative, an ambitious program to deploy a network of AI-optimized supercomputers across Europe. The initiative includes four flagship systems:
- LUMI-AI (Finland) — now in service
- JUPITER (Germany) — Europe's first exascale supercomputer, located at the Jülich Research Center
- Alice (France) — an exascale system planned for deployment at CEA's TGCC computing center
- Leonardo AI (Italy) — an AI-optimized partition at the Leonardo supercomputer facility
Together, these systems form a distributed European AI computing backbone designed to reduce the continent's dependence on non-EU computing infrastructure for critical AI development.
Building on a Proven Legacy
LUMI-AI's predecessor, the LUMI supercomputer, has been one of Europe's most successful HPC systems. In the 2024 Top500 list, LUMI ranked 8th globally with a performance of approximately 380 petaflops. The original LUMI system, based on HPE Cray EX technology with AMD EPYC processors and MI250X accelerators, has supported groundbreaking research in climate modeling, cancer detection, and large language model development.
LUMI-AI extends this legacy by repurposing the proven infrastructure for the AI era, offering European researchers and businesses access to computing power tailored specifically to modern AI workloads.
Strategic Context: AI Sovereignty and Regulation
The launch of LUMI-AI takes on added significance against the backdrop of the EU AI Act, the world's first comprehensive AI regulation. The Act introduces requirements that high-risk AI systems be developed and trained under stringent oversight, with implications for where computing infrastructure is located. LUMI-AI and its sister systems provide the sovereign computing capacity necessary to meet these regulatory demands, ensuring that European organizations can develop compliant AI systems without relying on infrastructure outside the EU.
In 2024, EuroHPC JU updated its strategic plan with an investment of 724 million euros dedicated to building AI supercomputers. This funding forms part of a broader European strategy that also encompasses seven AI factories — including the LUMI AI Factory in Kajaani — selected in December 2024 to create an integrated ecosystem of computing power, data resources, and talent for AI development.
Green Computing: An Arctic Advantage
LUMI-AI continues the green computing tradition established by its predecessor. The Kajaani data center, located near the Arctic Circle in northern Finland, benefits from the region's naturally cold climate, which enables efficient free cooling throughout much of the year and significantly reduces energy consumption. The facility is powered entirely by renewable energy sources, primarily hydroelectric power from local rivers.
This combination of Arctic location, renewable energy, and advanced cooling design makes LUMI-AI one of the most environmentally sustainable AI supercomputing platforms in the world. The green credentials are increasingly important as AI training workloads are notoriously energy-intensive, and European policy mandates strict sustainability standards for data centers.
Access and Availability
LUMI-AI will be open to a broad range of European users:
