Isar Aerospace's Spectrum Reaches Orbit in Europe's First Launch
On 5 September 2026, Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket reached orbit from Andøya, Norway—the first privately developed European launcher and the first orbital launch from continental Europe. The flight also makes Isar the first provider to clear ESA's European Launcher Challenge milestone.
On the evening of 5 September 2026, a 28-metre rocket rose from a launch pad on the Arctic island of Andøya and, for the first time, carried a privately developed European vehicle all the way into orbit. Isar Aerospace's Spectrum lifted off at 20:12 UTC from the company's dedicated complex at Andøya Spaceport in Nordmela, Norway, on a mission the Munich-based firm named "Onward and Upward." The flight did more than place satellites in the sky: it marked the first time any orbital-class launch had reached space from continental Europe, and the first time a European commercial company had built and flown its own path to orbit.
The vehicle is a two-stage booster standing 28 metres tall with a 2-metre diameter. Both stages burn a clean combination of liquid propane and liquid oxygen, and propulsion comes from ten engines of Isar's own design. Nine Aquila engines power the first stage; a single vacuum-optimised Aquila sits on the upper stage, which is built to restart in flight and thus removes the need for a separate kick stage. Key hardware, including the combustion chambers and turbopumps, is 3D-printed, and the company says the rocket can lift up to 1,000 kilograms to low Earth orbit or 700 kilograms to a sun-synchronous orbit.
Spectrum did not reach orbit on its first try. Its maiden flight, called "Going Full Spectrum," left the same Norwegian pad on 30 March 2025 and was cut short roughly thirty seconds after liftoff. An inquiry completed within two months found that a vent valve opened unintentionally as the rocket began its roll maneuver, triggering a loss of attitude control. The flight-termination system performed as designed, shutting down the nine first-stage engines at about T+30 seconds and steering the vehicle into the sea away from the pad. Norwegian regulators reviewed the findings. Isar responded by hardening the flight software and widening the vehicle's operational margins before returning to the pad.
The second flight cleared every gate the first one missed. After maximum aerodynamic pressure, stage separation, upper-stage ignition and fairing jettison, Spectrum entered an initial transfer orbit of roughly 500 by 180 kilometres and then fired its upper-stage engine again to circularise. The payload then separated into what the company describes as a roughly 500-kilometre orbit.
What rode upstairs has been the subject of some confusion in early reporting, and the discrepancy is worth stating plainly. Isar's own manifest, confirmed by independent accounts, lists five CubeSats plus one technology-demonstration experiment. The five separable satellites—deployed by the German integrator Exolaunch—were CyBEEsat from the Technical University of Berlin, TriSat-S from the University of Maribor, Platform-6 from EnduroSat, FramSat-1 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and SpaceTeamSat-1 from the Technical University of Vienna. The experiment, supplied by the German hardware firm DCUBED, was mounted on the second stage to test a release actuator rather than deployed as a free-flying satellite. ESA's public summary described the cargo as "six commercial and educational CubeSats and an experiment," a wording that appears to fold the experiment into the CubeSat count. Because Isar said it was still confirming individual satellite status after flight, the safest description is five CubeSats and one attached experiment.
The payloads themselves were not chosen at random. They were selected through the first Microlauncher Competition run by the German Space Agency at DLR, and the mission was backed by ESA's Boost! programme, which co-funds commercial space-transport initiatives. That institutional scaffolding matters: it is how a startup with no flight heritage won both early capital and a credible first customer base.
The flight's strategic weight goes well beyond a single successful insertion. In 2025, Isar was among the companies selected for ESA's European Launcher Challenge, a programme that requires participating providers to reach orbit no later than 2027. With this launch, Isar became the first of those providers to clear that threshold. The backdrop is a years-long gap in European launch capacity: Ariane 5 retired in 2023, Ariane 6 serves a heavier market segment and has been slow to ramp, and Europe's access to Russian Soyuz ended after 2022. For small satellites, there has been no reliable European ride. Spectrum's success begins to close that hole.
Isar is also betting that one rocket is not the point—cadence is. The company has built a roughly 40,000-square-metre production facility near Munich, designed to assemble more than thirty vehicles a year, with the firm citing a longer-term target of up to forty. Chief executive and co-founder Daniel Metzler, whose chairman is former SpaceX engineer Bulent Altan, framed the moment in blunt terms: "Europe now has sovereign access to space."
Analysis. The headline achievement—a one-tonne class payload to low Earth orbit—looks modest next to a Falcon 9. But the durable value is industrial rather than immediate. By proving it can design, print, integrate and fly a complete launcher almost entirely in-house, Isar has established the manufacturing base and skilled workforce on European soil that any future reusable or heavier vehicle would depend on. The Arctic-launch model, with Andøya joined by sites in Scotland and Sweden, also signals a structural shift from state-led mega-boosters toward venture-funded micro-launchers operating from high-latitude pads—mirroring the deregulation that reshaped aviation decades earlier. The open risk is economics: SpaceX's rideshare already sets the price benchmark, and a European micro-launcher lives or dies on whether dedicated, responsive access commands a premium that customers will actually pay.
